Obviously, she thought, this Santa has serious emotional problems. She was on the verge of calling 911 to remove this unhinged man as quickly as possible, when she witnessed what she would later call “the miracle of the circling”; this slowly revolving Father Christmas, and all these little creatures of light clinging lovingly to him. She felt herself drawn to the group—as if pulled by a magnet.

The spell was broken by the compressed air “hiss” and screech of brakes of the junior high school bus, which stopped at this corner to load or unload students that lived on the block. A few of the junior high kids on the mid-afternoon bus had younger brothers or sisters at the day care, and were tasked with escorting them home.

“Miss Colleen, can we surprise them?” asked Lorrie.

“Yeah! Santa, can you do something like you did to us at the window? That was SO cool!” screamed Jimmy. All the kids were jumping up and down with excitement, shouting “Oh, please!” Colleen was stunned by how differently these kids viewed things than she; perhaps there wouldn’t be any night terrors after all. She hesitated for a moment, then gave into the spirit of it.

“Okay, I’ll answer the door and stall them for a few seconds. Santa, you run and hide or something! Then just do, well . . . whatever Santas do.” Now she was as excited as the kids. They could hear the older kids chatting as they came up the steps. The doorbell rang. The young children jumped onto the big couch, and sat tight, elbow-to-elbow, like peas in a pod. Joe hid behind the Christmas tree next to the couch. Colleen opened the door. Chit-chatting to buy time, she slowly ushered the junior high kids inside. One of the teens, an emerging Alpha-stud type with an attitude, bee-lined over to the couch. Towering over his little brother, he bellowed, “Come on Billy, we’ve gotta split!”

“Don’t you want to see Santa?” the little guy protested.

“Santa?” the tough kid snorted.

“Yeah, he’s here!”
